From Kempele to China and the world WE'VE come a long way since 1977, when electronics professor Seppo Säynäjäkangas from Kempele in northern Finland built a prototype of the world's first wireless heart rate monitor. In the same year he was joined at Polar Electro by Pekka Rytky, whose thesis work resulted in the Tunturi Pulser, the company's first commercially marketed monitor. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Polar Electro markets a range of about 40 portable monitors and employs a total staff of 1,300 people. BASIC CONCEPT UNCHANGED The basic idea of a Polar Electro portable heart rate monitor is still the same as it was in the 1970s prototype. "There are still electrodes that detect the pulse and send a signal to a receiver," explains marketing operations manager Mari Kähkönen. "We have merely extended this central concept over the years. In the 1990s we set up two basic commercial operations making specialist devices for competition athletes and user-friendly products for fitness enthusiasts."
