The narrowest alleyways can lead to the most perfect little Italian osterias. One of the most beautiful souvenirs is a Venetian mask. Lay DOWN IN LIDO If you're after a relaxing day at the beach or some nightlife, take a vaporetto to the Lido the beach island that's a popular hangout for locals and tourists alike. here, you can spend time on your own or partake in beach parties hosted by locals. Part of Lido's sandy strip belongs to hotels, but there are two public beaches on the north and south ends of the island where you can soak up the rays. The island also hosts the annual Venice Film Festival every september. TREaSURE hUNTING Like many other cities in Italy, Venice is also filled with art. after getting inspired at an art exhibition in, for example Palazzo Grazzi, the Venice Guggenheim or the bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, you can go shopping for some art to take home: san barnaba, dorsoduro and Murano are the best areas. Finding Venetian treasures is not difficult. The most traditional souvenirs are Murano glass artefacts, lace parasols and theatrical masks that are sold in pretty much every souvenir shop in the city. In addition you can find personalised, handmade stationary, and notebooks in specialist stores like Il Pavone in dorsoduro and crafts and jewellery made by local designers. after spending the day soaking up the sun in Lido, touring the city by foot or waterbus and searching for that little piece of Venice to take back home with you, take a seat at a bar in an osteria such as osteria enoteca san Marco and you won't be alone for long. The smaller the place the more likely it is that you'll end up in a conversation with some locals and the bartender. STay cONNEcTED while most hotels are equipped with free wifi, not many cafés offer the same service. If you don't want to buy Venice Connected (www. veniceconnected.com) internet time which is available in some public areas, there's free wifi in Campo San Bartolomeo near the Rialto Bridge. For a touch of nostalgia, coin-operated public phones dot the city's narrow streets.
