Jouko. NatureGate aims to become more interactive with technical help from Nokia, who together with Finnair are among the project's important corporate sponsors. The idea is that users will submit field observations and photographs together with GPS data, which can then "It's more important than ever to understand nature and how it's changing." be used by NatureGate's professional naturalist partners to help build up a better picture of where different species occur. Users will also be able to create their own personal online nature diaries. "Today it's more important than ever to understand nature and how it's changing. Changes in the distributions of butterflies, for instance, can tell us a lot about climate change," explains Eija. "Through NatureGate we want to increase awareness of nature and make people feel responsible." A special version of NatureGate will later be designed for young schoolchildren, to help teachers to get them interested in their natural surroundings. THE SKY'S THE LIMIT The current website version of NatureGate features many of Finland's plants, birds, butterflies and landscapes. "We soon hope to have images of all of Finland's wild birds and butterfl ies online," says Jouko, whose own photographs feature in the site alongside the work of some of Finland's leading nature photographers. "We're already dreaming of expanding the site to cover trees, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, fish, marine life, rocks and minerals, and even the night sky!" he adds. "NatureGate pages in French and Spanish are now available alongside Finnish, Swedish, English and German versions and Norwegian and Danish pages are coming soon," says Eija. The Lehmuskallios now aim to go truly international with NatureGate, by collaborating with expert partners such as university natural history departments to tailor similar sites featuring each country's own flora and fauna. There is already keen interest in the idea in Estonia, Scandinavia and the UK.
