One of the most fascinating of this year's new releases is Jen Lin-Liu's Serve the People: A Stir-Fried Journey Through China (Houghton). This is a non-fiction memoir by a Chinese-American culinary journalist who moved to Beijing and started taking classes at a traditional local cooking school. She takes the reader through the city's noodle stalls, dumpling houses and trendy restaurants, while exploring the fascinating roles of food in Chinese culture. You can delve into the secrets of Chinese cuisine at Lin-Liu's weekly cooking classes at Black Sesame Kitchen, which she founded. Gongti bei lu 4, Chaoyang Maison Boulud Daniel of NYC fame has arrived in Beijing, and he has brought his fantastic French "soul" food with him.
