"It has to do with the rough climate. If you build a house badly, it will freeze and crumble in the first winter. It's the same with boats. We want to make things to the best of our ability." Production of the graceful Nautor's Swan sailing boats continues at the yard in Pietarsaari. Once again, there's pride in carrying on long traditions in a modern business environment. "We've been building boats on Finland's east coast for centuries," says Blomgren. In the case of Nautor's Swan, abundant local timber has given way to composite materials such as glass fibre, aramid and carbon. As Blomgren points out, the customer base for Finnish boats has widened too. "The first boats built in this area centuries ago were war ships for the kings of Sweden. These days, Nautor's Swan does not target any special group, although 50 per cent of our customers are return customers. After-sales service is extensive, so we build a relationship with our customers." The future continues to look bright for Finnish boat brands, says Blomgren, as long as they recognise that quality is fundamental to success. "As an industry, we cannot compete in price any longer.
